While there are many benefits to making a move to a senior community, many Baby Boomers are choosing to “Age in Place,” or grow older at home, at a rate that is more frequent than people of earlier generations.

Many older adults find that with some helpful adaptations, they can enjoy many more happy and comfortable years in their home. As a proud member of the National Age In Place Council, A Smooth Move is here to help ensure older adults’ homes will continue to be a place where they thrive.

Is aging in place an option for you or a loved one? Consider the following tips as a quick guide on how to successfully age in place.

Evaluate a floor plan redesign.

Safe access to all living spaces is important. Consider working with our Senior Move Manager to review your space and to discuss alternative floor plan ideas. Sometimes, main floor dining rooms can make a spacious bedroom.

Prioritize sorting & organizing.

Making a new space configuration will require sorting and organization. At A Smooth Move, we work help with sorting and downsizing in space. Clients are surprised at how encouraging and supportive our team is. Our team is experienced in organizing your living spaces while always reflecting your unique style and personality.

It may be necessary to install grab bars, stair lifts, or ramps in the long term. There is huge range of supportive options to make your home extra comfortable. We have referral partners who can evaluate and help. Also see our list of local services for older adults.

Have a plan for food preparation and nutrition.

Eating well is critical to good health. Today, there are more options than ever to have healthy and delicious meals delivered right to your door. In the event you are no longer able toprepare meals for yourself, it’s important to make a plan for how this will happen.

Consider housekeeping assistance.

Have you ever wished the shoemakers elves would come while you slept to make your home sparkle? Many older adults find having a housekeeper come in once a week to wash floors, clean bathrooms and even do up the laundry is a wonderful option.

Work with a Home Care company.

Struggling with wound care, medications or even someone to visit with over tea? Home care companies are worth speaking to. You might be surprised at how affordable and valued home care can be.

Identify options for transportation.

Maintaining a vehicle can be a challenge. You might consider hiring a ride service to do the driving. They are dependable and can be a real cost saver.

Using these tips to  consider and plan ahead can make all the difference in living the life you want at home now and in the years to come.
