For seniors, moving to a new place often involves downsizing. Not only in terms of purging and decluttering stuff, but also downsizing in square footage to a smaller home to age in place, or possibly into a senior living or assisted living facility. While many people focus on organizing the move-out process, it’s equally helpful to consider needs on the move-in, namely how the new space can accommodate the belongings kept as well as creating a functional and accessible layout.
“We focus on the needs of clients who are older adults, often downsizing from a home that they have lived in for 40 years or more,” says Kimberly Alwin, owner of A Smooth Move, which has been helping older adults with their moving needs in the Rochester area for over 15 years, and recently expanded operations as mover in the Twin Cities for older adults. “We find that creating a floor plan in advance will help ensure the correct pieces are chosen to make the new space feel like home.”
Before you make your move, here are six quick tips to consider in downsizing belongings to maximize your floor plan.
- Allow for clear walkways, as least 30” or space, without interference from belongings. This is important for safety, as well as aesthetics.
- A comfortable distance to sit from a 60” television is 7.5 – 12.5 feet. Consider this when planning your living room layout.
- A chair placed near a bedroom closet works nicely. Consider if you own an accent chair that would help assist you in dressing and undressing.
- Large pieces are best placed along a wall to maximize the space.
- Too many chairs may result in the new space looking like a furniture store. Think about comfort and function.
- Rugs, coffee tables and ottomans can be a dangerous trip hazard. Consider this when choosing accent furniture and accessories.
“We help clients with their move by creating a ¼ scale floor plan of the new space. This always makes the move go well and the outcome be positive,” says Kimberly Alwin, owner of A Smooth Move. “If you need a hand with a floor plan, give us a call. We can help.”
